Living In An Apartment With Fluffy

March 1 2025

Do you and your cat live in an apartment? Kitties could be the perfect pet for apartment dwellers. Fluffy is little enough to effortlessly dash beneath any size restrictions. She will not require walking or training, and she can function well in small areas. While some of our feline friends have a penchant of ‘caterwauling,’ the majority will not be loud enough to irritate your neighbors. An Olathe, KS veterinarian offers advice on how to keep Fluffy happy, healthy, and purring in the apartment below.

How Do You Provide Enrichment For Apartment Cats?

Fluffy will require some form of amusement. Toys are great, but they aren’t the only option. There are some simple things you can do to make your cat’s environment more enjoyable and comfortable.

Provide things for your pet to explore. Cat tunnels are fantastic, but if you don’t have enough space, you can simply supply an occasional box. (Fluffy’s passion for boxes should never be underestimated.) Paper grocery bags are also very popular with kitties. Simply trim the handles first, so your pet doesn’t get stuck.

It’s also important to offer a wide range of entertaining toys. You don’t have to spend a fortune on pet toys, but you should ensure that she constantly has something to pounce on.

Provide A Window Seat

Window seats provide hours of entertainment for cats. Provide your furry explorer with a comfortable seat with a nice view. Your pet may spend hours watching birds, squirrels, and people. Just make sure your windows or screens close properly.

Offer Plants

Many cats enjoy sniffing and eating plants. Fluffy may like pretending to be a ferocious tiger hunting you in the wild. Simply prioritize your lovely pet’s safety. Choose nontoxic plants. (Hint: the ASPCA website offers a comprehensive list.)

Be careful with how you organize things. Heavy plants with trailing vines or dangling macrame ropes should not be placed on thin stands or in areas where your cat could knock them down.

Catproofing An Apartment

Fluffy will see herself as a fierce predator and seek to improve her hunting abilities no matter where she stays. This is, of course, really cute to see, and one of the reasons cats make such good companions. Kitties, on the other hand, have no idea what is or is not safe for them. You’ll need to perform some basic pet proofing. That means removing or securing anything unsafe. Small or sharp objects, plastic bags and ties, chemicals, drugs, and other risks are included on this list. For more information, speak with your veterinarian.

Veterinary Care

All cats require regular veterinary care! visit our animal clinic on a regular basis with Fluffy. Our feline buddies need microchipping, parasite control, immunizations, spay/neuter surgery, and checkups! Keep a look out for symptoms of illness in between visits. If you detect anything wrong, call your Olathe, KS veterinarian right away.

What Are the Must-Haves For A Cat In An Apartment?

Fluffy would undoubtedly prefer to have a fully stocked fishpond and kitty shelves in every room, but you don’t have to go that far. In truth, our feline friends are relatively easy to keep.

That being said, let’s look at some of those kitty essentials.

  • Dishes: Fluffy will need some dishes. A lot of cats enjoy rushing water. You could think about getting your feline pal a pet fountain.
  • Powder Room: A litterbox and litter are musts, of course. For the most part, styles and brands can be chosen based on personal taste. However, there are a few exceptions. If you get a kitten, avoid using clay or clumping litter. If your pet is a senior, pick something that is simple for her to get into and out of.
  • Playthings: Fluffy needs fun toys to play with and push under the couch. Kitties each have their own preferences here, so experiment and see what your pet prefers. Fluffy should ideally have items to play with on her own, as well as interactive toys that you can control.
  • Purrniture: Cats aren’t afraid to utilize their owners’ goods, but they do benefit from having some of their own. Of course, the gold standard in this case is a cat tower. Make sure your furry little diva has a good scratcher. Beds would also be high on the list, though your feline companion won’t mind using yours.
